Focus on Literacy

If you’re ever looking for ideas about how to promote reading and literacy at home, consider checking out Pinterest. Here’s a fun idea we found this week by Serendipity from Jewels:

Once Upon A Time Story Bags

  • Find a bag (cloth, paper, or plastic will work) and write ‘Once Upon A Time . . .’ on the front.
  • Add toy, felt, or your own personally-created animals, mythical creatures, plants, buildings, a treasure chest, rainbows, clouds, methods of transportation, and anything else you might want to use in a story.
  • The first person starts the story with ‘Once upon a time . . .’ then picks an item out of the bag and starts the story. Every person playing takes a turn drawing an item and adding to the story.
  • If you’re not a fan of fairy tales, use whatever theme you and your child prefer. This is a fun way to promote literacy.

For the 2017/18 school year, the SCC has purchased Mathletics accounts for all DPS students in grades 1-8. The accounts are accessible at any time, in any location that has an internet connection. All students need to do is visit the Mathletics website at http://ca.mathletics.com, sign in, and get going!

Douglas Park School Staff Profiles

We have amazing staff at Douglas Park School! With so many new faces at school this year, and to get to know our returning staff better, here are some staff profiles:

Cori Knelsen, Principal

Favourite books growing up:

Charlotte’s Web and Black Beauty were the first two chapter books I read and I absolutely loved them both!

Favourite subject in school:

Language Arts.  I’ve always loved reading and writing. Many people would probably say I love speaking too!

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I had the opportunity to spend a month in Italy a couple of years ago, and I would love to do that again! France, Ireland, Spain, Japan, and New Zealand are on my list of places to visit.

What were your hobbies when you were growing up?

I loved playing sports, playing piano and singing, and making any kind of art.

As a child, what did

you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a writer. And I also spent a lot of time playing teacher!

Anna Edoo, Learning Resource Teacher

Favourite books growing up:

Green Days by the River by Michael Anthony, and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe

Favourite subject in school:

Spanish.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I would like to visit Spain with my Mother as that is a place she has always wanted to go and we both have a love of Spanish.

What were your hobbies when you were growing up? I enjoyed reading, riding my bicycle, roller skating, and singing.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher and a singer.

Cambri Cutting, Grade 2 Teacher

Favourite books growing up:

I absolutely loved Robert Munsch books. I remember ordering Something Good from the Book Order and reading it over and over again. I love that I get to share my love of his books with my Grade 2 students. Something Good is still one of my all time favourites.

Favourite subject in school:

I am not sure I have ever had a favourite subject, I have always just loved school in general. If I had to pick I would pick Literacy. I have always loved writing.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

I LOVE travelling and have been many places and have many more on my list. At the top of my list is Africa. Not only would I love to go on a safari and see zebras, giraffes and lions in person but I would also love to go and teach in a school there.

What were your hobbies when you were growing up? I have always loved soccer. I started playing when I was four and continued until I was 18 and injured my knee. I

was also in Brownies. I loved earning badges and trying to learn new skills.  I didn’t really love the camping back then though but have developed a love for it now as an adult.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I knew in Kindergarten that I wanted to be a Kindergarten teacher. Ironically, that was my first job 11 years ago. Honestly, teaching has always been what I wanted to be when I  grow up.  How lucky am I that I get to live out my dream?

Danielle Dumelie, Grade 8 Teacher

Favourite books growing up:

I loved (still love) the book Me and the Boys by Ellen Recknor. It is an exciting book about a girl who joins a group of outlaws to find hidden treasure. I enjoy cheering on the  main character as she makes her own adventure in the old west.

I also loved Winter of Fire by Sherryl Jordan, Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery, and The Doll by Cora Taylor.

Favourite subject in school:

Art and Literacy! They're still my favourite subjects.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

It is hard to choose! My daughter and I would love to go on a family trip to Paris/ France and I think I would like to travel to Belgium to research my family roots.

What were your hobbies when you were growing up? I grew up on a farm, and I loved to ride horses and raise animals. I was a synchronized

swimmer, I played the

violin. I loved to read, draw, paint and sew.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An artist, a veterinarian, an architect, a geologist, a farmer, a welder, a florist, a lawyer. So naturally I became a teacher, because I get to be a little bit of everything.
