2018 READ-A-THON INFORMATION

This year, Douglas Park School is holding its annual Read-a-Thon WITH A TWIST! We’re holding a friendly competition with Wilfred Hunt School (home of our former vice-principal, Tannis Lowey-Chimilar) to see which school can get more students to read between February 1 and 28.

There’s a lot on the line! Consequences for losing include promoting the winning school’s colours, having a crazy hair day (staff), and even more humiliation. Help DPS win the Read-a-Thon by encouraging your kids to read or by reading to them during the month of February!

What’s a Read-a-Thon?

During the Read-a-Thon, students collect donations to spend time reading or being read to. The Read-a-Thon is a chance to raise funds for our school and inspire students and their families to read! Read by yourself, read aloud to someone else, or have someone read to you. It doesn’t matter—just read as much as you can and keep track of what and how long you read.

What will donations be used for?

All profits will stay in our school and support our students in school-/education-based activities such as school speakers, field trips, reading supports, educational events, and more.

Rules (please review carefully)

• NEW – reading and being read to count for students of all ages. Reading aloud also counts, whether it’s to your friend, brother, sister, parents, or pets!
• NEW – only time spent reading or being read to OUTSIDE of classroom time counts. Reading at recess or lunchtime does count for the Read-a-Thon.
• No guessing or rounding off minutes: look at the clock or use a timer or stopwatch. Please be honest so it will be fair and fun for everyone.
• All reading logs must have a parent/guardian signature to be eligible.
• The SCC may set a maximum number of hours per day.
• All donations must be turned in from each pledge to be eligible. Donations and all other forms are due Thursday, March 1st.
• If cheques are returned, the pledge will need to be paid by money order or cash. There is a $15 fee for NSF cheques.

There are Prizes!

➢ Every student who reads a minimum of 420 minutes in total (about 15 minutes per day) AND raises a minimum of $40 will receive a $10 gift card from Toys ‘R’ Us, Walmart, or Chapters!
➢ The top 2 readers from each classroom will receive a pizza party and special recognition!
➢ The 3 classrooms (1 in each learning community) with the highest total number of minutes will receive a classroom treat!
➢ When all students in a classroom participate in the Read-a-Thon, that classroom will receive a treat! (Classrooms with the highest total minutes are not eligible.)
➢ Each minute spent reading / being read to counts as an intramural house team point. This is a great way to increase your total points as a team!
Reading is FUN and it improves vocabulary, communication skills, knowledge, concentration, and the ability to empathize.

READ-A-THON PLEDGE FORM

Make a pledge to encourage reading and raise money for Douglas Park School! All funds will stay in our school and support our students in school-based activities (e.g., school speakers, field trips, reading supports). This year’s Read-a-Thon is based on the number of donations raised and minutes spent reading / being read to between February 1st and 28th.

To collect pledges, ask parents, grandparents, relatives, and friends to support your time spent reading to earn money for your school. DO NOT collect pledges from someone you or your parents don’t know. It’s not safe and is strongly discouraged by the school and SCC.

Donations: donations can be collected by parents or students at any time during the Read-a-Thon. Students have been provided with a collection envelope for pledge forms and donations. Pledge forms, donations, and reading logs must be returned to the school by Thurs., March 1st. Please make cheques payable to “Douglas Park SCC”. There is a $15 fee for NSF cheques.

READ-A-THON READING LOG

Please indicate on the calendar below the number of minutes the student read or was read to each day between February 1st and 28th. Remember that only time spent reading or being read to OUTSIDE of classroom time counts.
Reading logs, pledge forms, and donations must be returned to the school on Thursday, March 1st. Students are not eligible for prizes unless the reading log has been signed by a parent or guardian and all documents and funds are returned to the school.
